Question & Answer
Question
Using Emacs or Textedit as the Default Editor
Answer
Overview
Free download unikey for mac. This technical bulletin explains the steps involved in setting up Emacs or Textedit as the default editor with Synergy. The use of wrapper scripts is required because Emacs and Textedit create backup copies of edited files. Both Emacs and Textedit will attempt to create backup copies of edited files in the same location as the files being edited, and in Synergy this is the cache area which is protected. Therefore just changing the text editor and viewer settings in the .ccm.ini file will not work when using Emacs or Textedit. However if you always startup your Synergy client session with the -rc option, then the wrapper scripts are not needed. Starting up Synergy with the -rc option will create local copies of the files in your work area, therefore both Emacs and Textedit will be able to create backup copies of the edited files in the work area.

1. Create a .emacs file in your home directory if one is not already present. Add to the.emacs file these four lines:
(setq make-backup-files nil)
(setq backup-by-copying-when-linked t)
The first line loads the server.elc program, allowing Emacs to run in server mode. The next three lines turn off the default of creating backup files when editing files with Emacs. Additionally you might have to add the following line that places the location of server.elc file in the Emacs load path:
2. In your personal .ccm.ini file modify the text editor and viewer settings or add new text editor and viewer settings if none are already present. These changes to the .ccm.ini file should be made without a CM Synergy client session running, this will ensure that the changes are not overwritten when exiting a client session. Below are some example settings from a .ccm.ini file that uses Emacs as the GUI and CLI editor and viewer.
4. Start up Emacs in server mode from the same window in which CM Synergy was started. To start Emacs in server mode, use the following command:
or from within Emacs type Esc-x server-start
The server.elc that is provided with Emacs works such that when killing a buffer, the Ctrl-x # key sequence terminates the edit client session but only pushes the buffer onto the buffer stack. CM Synergy provides a modified version of server.el that functions differently. When a buffer is killed the client edit session is terminated and the buffer is actually killed, not put onto the buffer stack. The server.el lisp file provided by CM Synergy needs to be byte compiled into a server.elc file. The procedure to byte compile server.el to server.elc is as follows:
Enter this command: Esc-x byte-compile-file, Emacs will then prompt for the location of a file.
Emacs will byte compile the server.el file to produce a server.elc file.
Textedit:
To use Textedit as the editor with CM Synergy follow the steps below:
1. Obtain a copy of ccmtextedit script from the Attachments section below.
2. Place a copy of the ccmtextedit script in your home account or $CCM_HOME/bin.
The ccmtextedit script copies source files controlled under CM Synergy into a temporary directory, starts a textedit session, and copies the file back when the file is saved. This is necessary because textedit attempts to create a backup file in the location where the file actually exists (not the link) when the file is saved, but the CM Synergy cache area is protected. The ccmtextedit script can be customized to use a different temporary directory path than the one in the script. To change the path, you would change the TMPDIR to another location.
